Soft Plastic Hellgrammite
This is a Hellgrammite lure. I found the original design on Thingiverse posted by Bryan Bush which was originally made as a hard bait but I decided to try and convert it into a mold for making a soft plastic version.
Bryan shared a link to his original tinker cad file so it was relativity easy to turn into a mold. (that is once you can figure out how Tinkercad works.) I had to change a few things like the size of the head and pincers so they would actually work when injected.
This is what half of the finished mold looks like in Tinkercad…
… and this is the real printed mold. (it’s only in two different colors because I printed it at the same time on two different printers.
This was the first two batches of injected lures. Overall they came out pretty well and are pretty close to actual size (I think.)
I haven’t tried them yet and I’m not sure if I just going to rig them with a small jig head or actually go back and try to inject them with a jig head in place like I did on my crayfish.
Even the bottom is pretty detailed (although its had to see in a soft plastic.)
Another version with a custom jig head.

Hi, Where can i get your designs for the molds?
I haven’t uploaded this anywhere yet but if you are looking to print your own just drop me an email and I can send you the STL.
hey i have been looking for a hellgrammite mold to cut in a cnc machine was wondering if you had anything preferably a step or solid model but an stl will work any help would be appreciated thanks
Unfortunately the way I did this mold I don’t think you would be able to cut this in a CNC machine. You would probably have to have the split line run along the legs. You may be able to redesign it to your needs though… the original files are on Thingiverse.
Very interesting, would you be willing to send me the file?
Sent you an email.
Bro this is awesome! I also love fishing and 3d printing, keep up the good work. Looking to make some molds myself.
Thanks, You should try it but be careful… once you start it’s like a never ending rabbit hole. 🙂
Would you be willing to make send me this mold so I can make some for my grandpa? Please let me know, thank you
Sorry I don’t make molds for others, I just don’t have the spare time right now.
what filament do you use?
I use PLA+ for all of my molds…. this video might be also helpful… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_FeUszxAK8s
Would you please send me the stl file for this mold. Thank you in advance.
I’m in the process of moving so I don’t have access to the files right now but email me after new year and I’ll see what I can do.
