Realistic Sunfish Jointed Swimbait Fishing Lure
This is a Realistic Sunfish Jointed Swimbait lure I am trying to design. It was my first try at modeling something in Fusion 360 so it was a learning process. I started this project in October of 2016 but it is still a work in progress but so far it’s been kind of a failure but I’m getting close I think.
STL files for these designs are available at Printables and can be found HERE.
The lure was designed from a picture of I fish a caught on my other printed lures.
The basic shape was done in Fusion360’s sculpt environment with details (fins and things ) added with normal sketches and extrudes.
The lure is printed flat in halves and BB’s are added for weight and the wire forms tested for fit.
The assembled lure ready for paint.
It can be painted to mimic many types of typical Sunfish. (E.g. – Bluegill, Pumpkinseed, Rockbass, even Crappie.) I choose to go with the pumpkinseed pattern after the fish its was modeled after.
10-19-16 – After paint and sealing it with epoxy the lures were ready to test. Unfortunately after all that work they really didn’t perform that well. I went back and added a lip to one and it worked a little better but still not well enough.
06-04-17 – The next season I tried a printed lip version but still it wasn’t right.
07-16-17 – Next I tested out some small lips but these were a failure too… it was very erratic and only worked at very slow retrieves.
08-22-17 – after that I tested out a single piece version to see if the problem was with the joint but this one was a the worst yet.
At this point I pretty much gave up on these and moved on to different lures.
4/2/18 – This year after learning about printing on fabric and trying it with a few other design with success (see my other pages) I came back to this design again and I’m getting close to a working lure. This worked OK I just need to play around with the weight distribution now.

Do you feel that one of the biggest problems in your original was getting the weight distribution correct or were there other technical issues? I am debating a build myself, with just a hinged tail. Not sure if I’m biting off more than I can chew!
I really don’t know where I went wrong with that one, it very well could be a weight issue I never tried changing that. I also might try moving the tie on point to the top on the head to see if that helps. Unfortunately I probably will not get around to trying any fixes on this one until next fishing season though.
